Opinion of a legal expert in international arbitration proceedings

2024. In March 2024, the firm’s partner, attorney-at-law Dr. iur. Lauris Rasnačs travelled to Stockholm to appear in person at an arbitration hearing and provide explanations of the expert opinions submitted in a case before the tribunal on a number of issues related to Latvian law.

The opinions covered a wide range of issues within this dispute, including an extensive discussion of the understanding of the principle of good faith and the freedom of contract and its limitations under Latvian civil law, as well as a detailed examination of the court practice applying a number of civil law instruments. For example, the peculiarities of unilateral withdrawal from a contract and application of contractual penalties in Latvian law as well as the interpretation of certain provisions of the Latvian Civil Law in the context of debt and interest recovery were analyzed.
